COUNTER-POINT: LEGAL SPORTS BETTING CAN’T BE BAD FOR NEW JERSEY BY JD MCNAMARA

Most people – and especially sports fans, gamblers, state officials, and those associated with online sports betting, casinos and racetracks – are excited by the US Supreme Court’s decision to strike down PASPA, the decades-old law that prohibited sports wagering outside Nevada.

Jonathon Trugman, who writes for the New York Post, is not one of those people. In an article he published on May 19, Trugman contends that, “Sports betting may not be all that good for New Jersey.”

I don’t believe this argument holds water, mainly because it’s based the notion that betting on sports is a “vice.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issues statement on gambling

As it was for my predecessors, there is no greater priority for me as the Commissioner of the National Football League than protecting the integrity of our sport. Our fans, our players and our coaches deserve to know that we are doing everything possible to ensure no improper influences affect how the game is played on the field. This week's ruling by the Supreme Court has no effect on that unwavering commitment.
We have spent considerable time planning for the potential of broadly legalized sports gambling and are prepared to address these changes in a thoughtful and comprehensive way, including substantial education and compliance trainings for our clubs, players, employees and partners. These efforts include supporting commonsense legislation that protects our players, coaches and fans and maintains public confidence in our games. We are asking Congress to enact uniform standards for states that choose to legalize sports betting that include, at a minimum, four core principles:

1. There must be substantial consumer protections;
2. Sports leagues can protect our content and intellectual property from those who attempt to steal or misuse it;
3. Fans will have access to official, reliable league data; and
4. Law enforcement will have the resources, monitoring and enforcement tools necessary to protect our fans and penalize bad actors here at home and abroad.

AS US MARKET PREPARES FOR LEGAL SPORTS BETTING, DFS INDUSTRY SCRAMBLES BY JD MCNAMARA

Well, it finally happened. After months of waiting for this exact ruling, Monday, May 14, 2018 became the day the US Supreme Court overturned PASPA – the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. The decision effectively removes all obstacles standing in the way of the growth of Las Vegas style sports betting in any state that welcomes it. For interested sports bettors, we covered which states are primed to accept wagers by the time the next NFL season rolls around.

There’s been plenty of conjecture about what the fall of PASPA ultimately means for the legal US gambling market, as well as who or what stands to benefit the most. It’s certainly no surprise that the jockeying for position amongst operators has already started.

SUPREME COURT DECISION CLEARS WAY FOR LEGAL SPORTS BETTING IN PENNSYLVANIA BY BILL GRINSTEAD

Today the Supreme Court handed New Jersey a massive victory in a case which has wide-ranging implications for the sports betting industry across the US, and Pennsylvania in particular. Justices ruled by a 7-2 vote to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), a law which has essentially prohibited sports betting outside of Nevada for over 25 years.

The decision opens the door for all US states to independently legalize sports betting within their borders, and gives PA the green light to move forward with its own industry plans.

THE STARS GROUP PLACES $4.7 BILLION BET ON SPORTS BETTING — WILL IT PAY OFF? by JD MCNAMARA

 PennBets.com

$4.7 billion is a large sum of money. It’s also the amount The Stars Group – parent company of PokerStars – say it has agreed to pay in return for UK-based Sky Betting & Gaming.

It’s pretty hard to classify this as anything other than a giant, brassy, bold-as-hell wager on sports betting maintaining its position as the fastest growing segment of the online gambling industry.

For The Stars Group, the torrid growth of global online sports betting coupled with the United States’ pending repeal of PASPA makes increasing its sports betting capabilities an undoubtedly smart move. The sheer amount of money makes it seem like a huge gamble, but if the play is sharp and you have the capital, getting the bet down is better than sitting on the sidelines.

In this case, only time will tell – but The Stars Group may not have to wait very long to to settle its bet.
