TurnpikeSports® NFL Week 17 Picks

Dave

The New York Jets at the New England Patriots

New England is favored by 13.5 points within O/U of 45.5

First off let me just say the Patriots are probably winning this game but 13. 5 points Is way too much. Over the last couple of games I’ve loved the way the Jets quarterback Sam Darnold has been playing. In those games he has a passer rating of 106.2, has thrown for 764 yards, 6 touchdowns with only 1 interception. I think that's enough for the Jets to keep a close.

I'm taking the New York Jets to cover

Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota is favored by 5 points with an O/U of 41

The only way the Bears can improve their playoff position is if the 49ers beat the Rams which is a game that is happening at the same time. If it's a blowout in the Rams game look for the Bears to sit their starters at halftime which would lead to an easy Vikings win.

I'm taking the Minnesota Vikings and laying the points

Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins

Philadelphia is favored by 6.5 points with an O/U of 42

This is a win or go home situation for the Eagles and a place where quarterback Nick Foles has been before. They will need some help however from the Chicago Bears in their game against the Minnesota Vikings. The Bears would have to win that game, a game that is happening at the same time because the Eagles/ Redskins game was moved from 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock. Either way the Eagles are going to go all out on this one and should easily beat the Redskins.

I'm taking the Philadelphia Eagles and laying the points

Doug

Dallas Cowboys @ New York Giants

Giants are a 6 point favorite with an O/U of 42.5

Cowboys have been playing really good football over the last couple weeks.  They’re 7-1 ATS in their last eight games versus the NFC East and 5 - 2 ATS overall.  The offense really picked up since the acquisition of Amari Cooper and both Prescott and Elliot have been churning out some really good numbers.  The Giants are 2 and 3 in their last five games and have been playing inconsistent ball all year. While Dallas doesn’t have too much to play, having locked up the division and a playoff spot.  But this is the Giants and I think the Cowboys would enjoy ending the year beating them at MetLife.

Pick is Cowboys

Cleveland Browns @ Baltimore Ravens

Ravens are a 6 point favorite with an O/U of 41

Earlier this season, I wouldn’t have even thought about this game, but it’s turned into possibly one of the best games this final weekend.  The Browns have lost just once since Week 10 and the same goes for the Ravens. The Ravens have more to play for in this game and have been playing really good defense over the last couple weeks.  But the Browns beat the Ravens earlier this year in an overtime game. I’m not sure about the overtime, but I have seen enough that the Browns thrive in the role of underdog. I think playing spoiler here might give them enough to keep the game close or possibly outright winning this one to end their season.

Pick is Browns

Chicago Bears @ Minnesota Vikings

Vikings are a 5 point favorite with an O/U of 41

The Bears are good this season.  Super Bowl good. And with all that talk about the Vikings and getting Kirk Cousins as the key for them to get to the Super Bowl, somehow the team isn’t quite as good as it was last year.  The Bears have a shot at the number two seed in the NFC and I think, with that defense playing so well this entire season, I think the Vikings are going to have a hard time beating this team.  I still find it hard to believe the Bears are the underdog here.

Pick is Bears

On a Wednesday, exactly six days before Christmas, Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) elected to drop a 101-page federal sports betting bill on the world.
The bill closely follows a discussion draft circulated weeks earlier. While it was known that the previous draft had input from more than just Hatch, there was confirmation Wednesday that Hatch’s writing partner was indeed Schumer.

TurnpikeSports® NFL Week 16 Picks

Dave

Jacksonville Jaguars at Miami Dolphins

Miami is a 4.5 point favorite with an O/U of 39

Jacksonville has had a horrendous season losing 9 of their last 10 games and they haven’t covered the spread on any of those 9 losses. One of the more impressive things about Miami is that they protect the ball with only two turnovers in the last four games. The Jaguars offense has been anemic with Cody Kessler as quarterback scoring only one touchdowns in the last 31 possessions.

I'm taking the Miami Dolphins and laying the points

Kansas City Chiefs at the Seattle Seahawks

Kansas City is a 2.5 point favorite with an O/U of 53.5

I think the Chiefs are just too powerful and have too many weapons for this Seattle defense. Seattle's defense couldn’t even prevent the 49ers from beating them last week and the Chiefs are much better team than the 49ers. With Baltimore breathing down Kansas City's neck I think the Chiefs will put up some big points against the Seahawks. I'm looking for this line to move closer to gametime from the 2.5 points to something a little higher.

I'm taking the Kansas City Chiefs

The Denver Broncos at the Oakland Raiders

Denver is a 2.5 point favorite with an O/U of 44

Oakland may be one of the worst teams in the league but I like this matchup against the Denver Broncos. Oakland is 4-2 against the spread in the last six weeks and the Denver’s offense is a mess right now scoring an average of 16.9 points in the last couple of games. Think about it, Denver was the favorite against the 49ers and the Browns and they lost both games. Oakland may not win but I think they'll keep a close.

I'm taking the Oakland Raiders

---

Doug

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys are a 7 point favorite with an O/U of 46.5

The Cowboys seem to be surprising everyone.  They have an 8 and 6 record and looked really good during their winning streak, beating teams like the Eagles (twice), Falcons, Redskins and Saints before being shut out by the Colts 23-0 last week.  They’re also 5-0 ATS in their last five versus the NFC and 5-1 ATS in their last six overall. Tampa could make this game competitive for a while, but after that Colts’ game, Dallas will be looking to make a statement.  I’m thinking that statement will come at Tampa’s expense.

Pick is Cowboys

Chicago Bears @ San Francisco 49ers

Bears are a 4 point favorite with an O/U of 42.5

A low line against San Francisco at home is how I got burned last week, as I sided with Seattle and the 49ers won outright. The 49ers are also dangerous in the regard that they have nothing to lose and that all 4 of their wins have come at home this season. However, the Bears still have a lot to play for even after clinching their division which is a first round bye.  I expect them to win this game with a strong performance all around.

Pick is Bears

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Miami Dolphins

Dolphins are a 4.5 point favorite with an O/U of 39

The Jacksonville Jaguars are piling up the losses due to a lack of offense, as they've scored 18 or less points in eight of their last 10 games and are averaging just a little over 9 points in their last three games. The Miami Dolphins are coming off a beatdown loss to the Minnesota Vikings, a game in which they fell apart in the second half, but they're a different team at home, despite all six home wins being won by single digits.

Pick is Dolphins

BIG CITY SPORTS BETTING: INSIDE SUGARHOUSE’S HISTORIC DEBUT IN PHILADELPHIA BY JOHN BRENNAN

Move over, Las Vegas. On Thursday, Philadelphia took over as the largest city in the U.S. to offer legal   sports betting  when SugarHouse Casino rolled out its temporary sportsbook.

Las Vegas, ranked 28th in the nation in population with just over 640,000 people according to the U.S. Census’s 2017 estimate, yields to Philadelphia’s sixth-place ranking    at almost 1.6 million.

SUGARHOUSE AND RIVERS LAUNCH SPORTS BETTING, TRIPLING PA SPORTSBOOKS by BART SHIRLEY

App Install_250x250_v3

Things are finally starting to roll with Pennsylvania sports betting. Both Rivers Casino and SugarHouse Casino launch their sportsbooks today.

Both casinos are owned and operated by Rush Street Interactive. No doubt their shared corporate parentage played a role in synchronizing the launches.

Rivers and SugarHouse are now entering a testing phase that the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will oversee. If the testing period at Hollywood Casino is any guide, the books should be officially done with that phase in a couple of days.

TurnpikeSports® Week 15 Picks

Dave

Cleveland Browns at the Denver Broncos

Denver is a 3 point favorite with an O/U of 45.5

I love how the Cleveland Browns have looked over the past couple weeks and what they did to the Carolina Panthers last week. In the last four weeks Baker Mayfield has thrown 9 touchdowns and over those four weeks the Browns have averaged 29.7 points a game. It looks like the Broncos' defense is on a downward spiral because in the last 3 games they have given up an average of 261 passing yards per game. I think this will be a close game, close enough to pick the underdog.

For the first time all year I'm taking the Cleveland Browns

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are a 8 point favorite with an O/U of 47

This is a game when the Baltimore Ravens' number 1 ranked defense will shine. With Tampa’s wide receiver DeSean Jackson injured and possibly out for the game, Tampa Bay may not have the weapons to put points up against the Ravens. And the fact that Baltimore is 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 home games will probably mean a long day for the Bucs.

I'm taking the Baltimore Ravens and laying the points

New England Patriots at the Pittsburgh Steelers

New England is a 1.5 point favorite with an O/U of 52

The Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger play much better when they're home. Roethlisberger seems to have big games against the Patriots throwing for 300 yards in five of his last six games against New England. And let's be honest, the Patriots 19th ranked defense looked pretty bad against the Miami Dolphins last week.

I'm going with the home underdog Pittsburgh Steelers
---

Doug

Cleveland Browns @ Denver Broncos

Broncos are a 3 point favorite with an O/U of 45.5

The Browns came out and played pretty well against the Carolina Panthers last week.  Baker Mayfield is now showing why he was picked first overall and with the new, potentially temporary, coaching staff in place, the team looks worlds better than they did under Hue Jackson and Todd Haley.  The Broncos on the other hand are coming in after a brutal loss to the 49ers and their playoff hopes are on life support. I’m thinking the Browns continue this stretch of good play and play spoiler for any playoff chances the Broncos may think they have.  I went with the Browns last week and nothing here tells me to go against them this week.

Pick is Browns

Tennessee Titans @ New York Giants

Giants are a 2.5 point favorite with an O/U of 43.5

The Giants have scored 70 points in their last two games so maybe they’re starting to figure out what their offense can really do after a really bad start to the season.  They’ve won four of their last five games and Saquon Barkley continues to do everything from scrimmage really well. Tennessee did beat Jacksonville last week, but, let’s face it, this season, that doesn’t mean much.  I’m going with the Giants.

Pick is Giants

Seattle Seahawks @ San Francisco 49ers

Seahawks are a 4.5 point favorite with an O/U of 44

It’s been a really interesting year for Seahawks fans.  The team was not playing well to start the season off, but lately, they seem to have started getting it together.  They’ve got a four game winning streak and have been outscoring opponents by more than 11 points per game. The 49ers did upset Denver last week, but they don’t score a lot.  They’ve scored less than 20 points in five of their last seven games. They are not a good football team. Seattle’s defense has stepped up and their offense is playing some really great football so I have a hard time not going with the ‘Hawks here.

Pick is Seahawks

Colorado Could Make Leagues Provide Proof They Wouldn’t Just Pocket ‘Integrity Fees’ by Brian Pempus

The state of Colorado is warming to sports betting, while turning ice cold toward the leagues.

In an undated document, state officials laid out the plans for legal sports wagering within the state’s borders. The document was first reported on Thursday by Colorado Public Radio.

The document follows an early August opinion from the state attorney general that said sports betting could be approved without a constitutional amendment.

Legal Experts Examine The New Federal Sports Betting Bill: Is This PASPA All Over Again? by John Brennan

The draft of a federal sports betting bill released this week by outgoing Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, much like a certain 26-year-old law that was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in May, has the federal government stepping into the picture.
So is this just another ill-advised effort to exert improper influence over the states?
The answer is — well, it’s complicated.
